Orbital Piercing

Orbital Piercing

Apr 24, 2012

earToday’s blog is going to be about the Orbital Piercing An orbital piercing is a piercing that enters and exits the same part of the ear. It actually made up of two piercing holes, with one ring going through both the piercings. Orbital piercings can be placed anywhere in the ear but they often located in the helix (outer ear rim) or ear lobe. Both piercings can be done at once or pierced separately. It is also possible to turn a single ear piercing into an orbital by adding another piercing nearby.

The jewelry that is typically used for the orbital piercing is going to be a captive bead ring. Doesn’t meant you have to have a captive bead ring in the piercing though you can you use a circular barbell. All jewelry inserted in a healing piercing should be made out of either 316-LVM ASTM f-138 implant grade Surgical Stainless Steel or ASTM F-136 6AI-4V ELI Titanium.

Jewelry should be “internally threaded”. This means the end ball threads into the post. Never be pierced with “externally threaded” jewelry. This type of jewelry is cheap. Jewelry not made of surgical stainless steel and can cause micro tears in the tissue that can harbor bacteria that may lead to a infection.

Sadly there isn’t really a history on the orbital piercing. However ear piercings going back thousand of years. The ear-lobe was probably man’s first attempt at body piercing due to the ease with which it can be pierced. The oldest mummified body in the world was found frozen in an Austrian Glacier in 1991, tests showed the body to be over 5,000 years old. The body had pierced ears and the holes had been enlarged to 7-11mm diameter. However the orbital piercing is a term that can be used for many different piercing in the ear. It generally refers to a piercing where on ring (CBR) enters the ear through two holes instead of one, thus creating the illusion of “orbiting” the ear.

Caring for your orbital piercing is very easy but does take a degree of patience. The piercing can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to be fully healed “every buddy’s body is different”. Personal hygiene must be kept to a very high standard. Avoid touching or rotating your jewelry, for these could cause some problems during the healing process. If you find it necessary to touch your piercing, make sure your hands are washed, cleaned and dried.

A piercing heals in stages so diligence is required to during the first few stages

To take care of your piercing you can do saline soaks or even a saline spray a couple times a day. The orbital piercing usually heals in 3 to 4 months. As a rule orbital piercing placed in the cartilage will take longer to heal than those nearer to the ear lobe. This is because cartilage contains fewer blood vessels.
While the piercing is healing you may experience some discomfort while sleeping. I recommend either not sleeping on the side that you have your piercing done on or getting a “O pillow”. A O pillow is a pillow that has a hole in the middle of it, your ear will fit nice and comfortable in that hole without you actually laying on the ear itself.

Shoplifters Be Warned!

Shoplifters Be Warned!

Apr 21, 2012

DSC00332 Shoplifters will be CompostedHere at the West Valley Blue Boutique, nothing gets us quite as fired up as catching a shoplifter! It affects our business and therefore our jobs, so we definitely keep our eyes peeled for people trying to steal our awesome merchandise. And it always seems like shoplifters try and steal the most ridiculous things. Why sir, would you try and get away with a $3.00 sticker when you have a wallet full of $20 bills? What about the gaudy Mardi Gras mask I had people try and stuff in their purse in the middle of June…don’t thieves know that holiday is months away? I guess it’s safe to say that most of the people we catch shoplifting are not exactly captains of industry.

Take our most recent offenders for example. Just a few nights ago we had the pleasure of dealing with a very interesting couple who thought it would be no big deal to steal from us…boy were they wrong! The woman, who came in with her boyfriend, was several months pregnant and apparently looking to spice things up with some of our lingerie. But it seems that she didn’t really want to pay for it. After trying on several items of lingerie and a teeny weeny bikini, the couple decided they needed to go outside for a smoke. Yes, you heard me correctly, unfortunately. After another one of their breaks, as well as the man going outside several other times to “check” on his dog, my employees began to get suspicious.

They checked the inventory count on a babydoll that they let the woman take in the dressing room and guess what…we were missing one. My assistant manager asked where the item had gone to and both people told her it had been put back. Not really believing them at this point, she went to the area they had spent a lot of time and start inspecting everything. She gave one of the robes a little shake and Voila!, out came broken pieces of one of our large sensor tags. With her suspicions more or less confirmed, she had the other sales associate keep the couple occupied while she called the police and explained the situation.

The police were here in no time – which you would hope considering the station is less than a block away – and questioning the couple. Despite the fact that the lady was pretty “out of it” and barely coherent with the police, it didn’t take long for them to find out that they had outstanding warrants. Apparently, this wasn’t their first go-round with criminal activity! After searching the car and finding a bra, shoes and the missing babydoll (all ours) along with some random porn (surprisingly, not ours) and a dog (that part was true at least!), the police had enough to take these two on down to the station. After animal control took the dog away and the police impounded the car, the sales girls could finally finish up and go home to decompress from the evening’s excitement.

The next day my assistant manager, who was still pretty amped about catching the shoplifters, managed to look up our offenders on the County inmate website. The man had been released, but our lady perpetrator was still behind bars because it turns out she had two prior convictions for the same crime. Three strikes you’re out I guess, or in, as the situation may be!. And $25,000 is a pretty high “get out of jail price tag” for anyone.

So ladies and gents, the moral of this story is please don’t try and shoplift from us. Our sleuth skills are strong, so more than likely we’ll figure you out and make you pay. And if by some strange chance we don’t manage to, don’t forget about karma…she can be a real bitch!

Surface Piercing

Surface Piercing

Apr 20, 2012

53A surface piercing is a piercing where the entrance and exit holes are (usually) pierced through the same flat area of skin where there is minimal movement. NOTE: Many surface piercings fail, not because surface piercings are impossible, but because there are a lot of incompetent piercers out there that don’t understand how the body heals. Make sure you go to an experienced piercer that can show you healed photos of surface piercings they have done! Some people can successfully heal surface piercings, however if you are not among the lucky few you can face migration, rejection and scarring.

Traditionally, surface piercings were simply done using the same method as regular piercings – with a straight or curved metal bar. This is about the worst way to do a surface piercing, and while a small percentage of people have healed them, they tend to be temporary. The jewelry puts a great deal of pressure on the healing skin above it, and its inflexibility causes even more stress as the skin moves.

Flexible jewelry has become popular recently in hopes that it will decrease pressure on the piercing, but is considered to be less reliable than the surface bar. Surface piercings have also been successfully healed with Tygon.

Surface bars are, in my opinion, the best jewelry for healing surface piercings because its perpendicular design was based on optimizing the body’s healing process. Body jewelry is worn inside a wound and is in contact with your internal tissues, so only certain products are suitable. The look of the jewelry that is placed in your fresh piercing must be secondary to aspects that affect safety and compatibility with your body. The size, style, material, and quality of the initial piece of jewelry all affect your ability to heal. The jewelry can be changed after you have successfully healed. Because the body jewelry industry is saturated with substandard products, piercers and clients alike may forget that cost alone should never be the key factor in your purchase. Jewelry for this piercing should be made of titanium. Titanium is a lightweight metal that is ideal for people with concerns about nickel sensitivity. This material can be anodized to create jewelry of different colors without affecting the safety. Look for implant certified titanium (Ti6Al4V ELI) that is ASTM F-136 compliant or ISO 5832-3 compliant, or commercially pure titanium that is ASTM F-67 compliant.

This piercing can either be done with a needle or a dermal punch and taper method. Either way is fine depending on the piercers preference. An internally threaded post will protrude to the surface making it easy to change your jewelry tops for your desired look.

The healing time on this piercing can be three to six months or longer depending on placement, after care, and your body. There is no need to twist or touch your jewelry, as this will only irritate your new piercing. It is very important to avoid snagging this piercing. You need to be aware at all times of things that could catch it such as; clothing, loofahs, wash rags, and towels. To clean your piercing you can either use H2Ocean or a saline soak. With the H2ocean spray both sides two to three times a day. You can make the saline soak at home by using a non-iodized sea salt mixture: Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized (iodine-free) sea salt into one cup (8 oz.) of warm distilled or bottled water, soak for five to ten minutes two to three times per day. Dry by gently patting with clean, disposable paper products. Cloth towels can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry, causing injury. Some risks can be migration, rejection, scarring, and snagging accidents.

Many piercers are not comfortable doing surface piercings because they are difficult to heal and a lot of them reject. Rejection means that the body slowly (or sometimes quickly) pushes them out through the skin, in the same way that the body pushes out a buried splinter. Rejection is affected by placement, blood flow, irritation and abuse, as well as general health. The healthier a person is, the less likely problems may arise. A surface piercing will only heal if it is easier for your body to keep the piercing in than it is to reject it. Since your body is designed to reject foreign objects, a little common sense makes it clear that it’s not easy to keep a surface piercing. The body resists foreign objects inside itself, and that includes piercings. Rejection occurs when it is “easier” for the body to push the piercing out like a splinter than it is to heal a fistula (skin tunnel) around it. You can spot rejection happening when there is abnormal redness around the piercing and then after a while, you can start to see the jewelry through the skin. As soon as you notice or think you notice rejection happening go to a professional body piercer immediately. Rejection can be dangerous and cause infection and severe pain and is common among surface piercings.

Surface anchors offer a unique look but are not for everyone. They require extra care and patience through the healing process. If you are considering getting a surface bar feel free to call or come in and talk with any of our experienced piercers at Blue Boutique.
